A good project manager should have several essential qualities to carry out his/her task in the most effective way for his/her interests and those of his/her stakeholders.
Among all of them, I would highlight negotiation as the touchstone of any relationship between organizations and the development of any project.
And here appears the đź’Ž BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement). This concept is used to refer to the best alternative that a party has in case an agreement is not reached during the current negotiation. The BATNA is an important tool to evaluate the strength of a position and to be able to make better strategic decisions.
Having a strong BATNA increases a party’s bargaining power by providing a viable alternative in case negotiations are unsuccessful. On the other hand, having a weak BATNA decreases bargaining power, as there is no attractive alternative in case an agreement is not reached.
In summary, the BATNA will help us to identify our objectives and to know how far we can go in the event of a disagreement with the other party.
With a well worked BATNA we should look for the ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement), where in case of closing the agreement it will be a win-win.
